Post 9: Ditching Your Meat Prison
Last week in the middle of my Digital Media Workshop class, our lesson on lighting and materials in Unity was paused when a classmate came out. They let us know they’re now using they/them pronouns, and told us to call them Rin instead of Catharine.
Being a small, tightknit group, all of us including our professor, Peter, were supportive and proud of them. The next fifteen minutes were spent talking about gender, sexuality, games, and what about this field clicks well with those who question their identity. Considering how much I’ve already talked about those topics in my posts, I wanted to continue that discussion here in a podcast style interview with two of my peers, Moose and Sab.
Being cisgender myself, I appreciate what Moose and Sab had to say about the importance of self representation. There is safety and reassurance in creative play spaces, where it’s normal to explore aspects of your identity. In games — especially those with customizable player characters — you are granted an opportunity to act as the manifestation of you want to be without judgement or societal constraints.
